Reproduction
The Maximilian is of breeding age when they are about 3 to 5 years old. In South America, the breeding season is typically October. During the breeding season, they can get noisy and the male Pionus in breeding condition can get aggressive towards their mates.
However, if Scaly-headed parrots are to be bred in captivity, this can be a tricky process. Male and female Pionus parrots do not display any notable sexual dimorphism (it is hard to distinguish one sex from the other) and are therefore hard to sex. The three most commonly used methods of sexing Pionus birds are DNA sexing, surgical sexing, and chromosomal analysis.
Female Scaly-headed Parrots lay 4 - 5 eggs, which are broadly elliptical or short ovate eggs. They approximately measure 32.5 x 24.5 mm
